Oriental Medicine Concepts  - Yin and Yang & Serenity Prayer

The Serenity Prayer, written by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and adopted by Twelve steps program best describe the Yin and Yang principle.

“God, grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.”

 Two fundamental truth.

The first line says; There are things that happen in your life, regardless of time and space, that you have no control over and will have no control over its outcome.

It describes the life of a plant. A tree bears 100’s of seeds to give a chance for a new life. A seed has no control over where it is planted. Maybe it will be lucky to fall into fertile ground, or not so lucky and ends up in a crack between stones. Does the seed receive enough water and sunlight? Each seed passively accepts the conditions it is given. Passivity is Yin in nature.

The second line says; There are things in the world that are within your control to achieve the desired outcome.

It describes the life of an animal. As an animal, we are able to move and actively acquire objects of desire. From hunting, gathering for food to any knowledge to improve the chance of reaching the goal, it is our choice and determination that makes the difference. Activity is Yang in nature.

The third line, the wisdom to know the difference, is Tao.

The horizontal and vertical cross Christ and two opposing triangle star of David symbols may also be the expression Yin and Yang.

On Aromancy board, you will find Metal and Water Element form the vertical line and Earth and Wood Element form the horizontal line.

Metal and Water represent our plant nature, which is Yin.

Earth and Wood represent our animal nature, which is Yang.

Two lines crossing with the Fire Element in the middle, which is Tao
