Oriental Medicine Concepts  - Five Element Theory

Together with Yin and Yang, the theory of the Five Elements form the basis of Oriental Medicine diagnostic method and is used in Acupuncture as well as in Herbal medicine. Five is a special number for mankind. We have five fingers and toes in each limb, five ordinary senses, five vital internal organs. In numerology, five comes after four, which represents home. So five is a number of exploration.  In the sky, there are five visible planets, those names we use for the Five Element.

Sun (日 ) - Yang, Moon (月) - Yin, Mars (火 ) - Fire, Mercury (水) - Water、Jupiter (木) - Wood,  Venus (金) - Metal, Saturn (土) - Earth.  This makes each day of the week

The names of the Five Elements, namely Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth are not to be confused with that of Four Element concept. The Greek philosophers thought in terms of the Four element as the basic building block of nature: Fire (hot-dry), Air (hot-wet), Earth (cold-dry), Water(cold-wet) , where the elements hold the basic qualities of natural phenomena (fire as the physical fire, water as the material water, a.s.o.) and can transform and generate each other.

Instead of considering as a building block of nature, in five element theory, each signifies an energetic characteristic, or a cycle and phase. The quantum theory explains everything in the universe as energy form at a different vibrational frequency and is continuously transforming. Closer to home, water can be solid, fluid, or vapor at different temperature.

Wood for example, it is difficult to consider as an Element in itself. But imagine a healthy tree; it is green, signifies the spring energy.

When you feel unsettled, we say we need to be grounded. This is an issue of Water  Element, not the Earth Element, as you might think.

Metal Element corresponds to the Lungs but it is not called Air Element. Perhaps we need a container for the air to be utilized.

This theory forms the foundation of Aromancy. Every essential oil has been assigned its righteous place on Aromancy board. This gives the collective power beyond what is commonly known efficacy and use.

The theory is a useful diagnostic tool to better understand the nature of the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of life we focus on during the session. Aromancy bridges human nature and wisdom of plants together.

A Note: If you are a practitioner or a student of acupuncture and herbal medicine you may find some descriptions of the Five Element theory to be inaccurate. Please accept and understand that this is a liberal adaptation of it for the use in Aromancy consultation, and the categorisation of essential oils.
